Little Sisters of Jesus

Contemplative in the Heart of the World

We believe that a truly contemplative life can be lived in the midst of the ordinary life of people around the world, simply sharing their day to day life, living conditions, work and dreams – as Jesus did at Nazareth.

Our Mission is one of presence, friendship and prayer, believing that this can be a sign of hope and healing in our broken world.

Jesus took on not only our flesh, but also the insecurity and powerlessness of the poor and oppressed of his time. By preference we seek to live among those who are inaccessible to other forms of Church ministry or whose day to day life is marked by division, racism, poverty or violence.

Through our vows we express our desire to live in union with Jesus, with his life and Mission. It is our hope that through our contemplation of his saving presence among us that our lives, too, will become a “presence” of the love of God for others.

We live together in communities of three or four, often from different races, nationalities and backgrounds, a sign of our need for one another and as a witness of the unity for which Jesus prayed.

We were founded in Algeria in 1939 in the spirituality of Charles de Foucauld to be a presence among our Muslim brothers and sisters. We are now a community of about 1000 women from 60 nationalities living throughout the world.
